So you have found out that you are expecting, congratulations! Here’s to first words, first steps, and of course the growing pains that come along with the labour and delivery. Because of the release of the hormone Relaxin (produced by both the ovaries and placenta during pregnancy), the ligaments of the pelvis relax and the cervix both widens and softens. This is to prepare your body for the symphysis pubis is the joint that connects the anterior (front) portion of the pelvis at the pubic bone. The joint is strengthened with ligaments allowing for movement and stability.

These joints will move and widen in preparation of birth to allow the child to pass through the cervix and into the outside world. For some women, this is not a comfortable sensation and they begin to experience pain in the pubic area along with some of the following additional signs and symptoms.

 Pain in the back, hip, or pelvis

 A grinding or clicking sensation

 Pain down the thighs, worsened with movement

 Increased pain at night causing disrupted sleep and difficulty moving in and out of bed
