It recognizes that all symptoms of disease are outward expressions of disharmony within the whole person, and that it is the patient who needs treatment, not the disease. In other words, symptom's only exists to let us know that the body is attempting to cope with an internal or external disturbance. This disturbance could be anything from a virus to a stress that is brought on by a divorce in the family. There fore, using a suppressive medication to stop the body from manifesting an outward symptom, in most cases, would do very little to correct the underlying disturbance (the cause). Homeopathy recognizes that once the disturbance has been corrected, the need for the body to express itself using morbid symptoms will cease. HOW DOES IT WORK? Homeopathic medicines work by using minute doses of substances from the plant, mineral or animal kingdoms, to trigger the body's own healing system. WHAT CAN I EXPECT TO HAPPEN DURING A HOMEOPATHIC CONSULTATION? In order to find the appropriate treatment for you, your homeopath will need to know about every aspect of your life. Diet, lifestyle, physical symptoms, temperament and character traits, are only a few of the things which will be discussed. Sometimes the mother's lifestyle and emotional health during the pregnancy may also need to be examined. The consultation will last about an hour and hopefully by the end of the session your homeopath will have a clear understanding of your "constitution". You constitution will then become the basis for all subsequent treatment using homeopathic remedies. WHEN SHOULD I SEEK A HOMEOPATHIC? If you are interested in the homeopathic approach in regards to your health, your homeopath should complete a constitutional assessment (review of entire health history, temperament, mental/emotional characteristics, etc.) prior to acute prescribing. Constitutional assessment allows your homeopath to choose an effective, acute remedy as quickly as possible when the need arises. WHY SEEK THIS TREATMENT? Homeopathy is used most often for common ailments such as colds, allergies or flu. In addition, homeopaths may treat chronic (but not life threatening) illness. Homeopaths also may offer treatment for emotional problems, such as depression or panic disorders. Not only is homeopathy used to treat existing illness, but it also may help prevent future illness. QUESTIONS FOR THE HOMEOPATH Before you decide whether homeopathy is right for you, talk with a homeopath. Asking the following questions may help you make an informed decision: What kind of training do you have and how long have you been practicing? Have you treated problems like mine before? Is there anything about my health that makes homeopathy inappropriate? What will a typical visit be like? How long will treatment take and how much will it cost? THE QUALIFIED HOMEOPATH Licensing rules for homeopaths vary from state to state (province to province) But all homeopaths must have some medical training and a degree. While that medical training can be in complementary care, it will always include schooling in modern medicine. Homeopaths often have an MD, ND, or DO designation after their names.
