Chronic Pain / Stress Management

General pain and stress management issues are addressed in all phases, including active conditioning through supportive, psycho-educational modules.

Through observation of patient performance during participation in designed modules and in the clinic by staff, patients who require a more detailed chronic pain/stress management program are identified.

Techniques include individualized sessions of cognitive restructuring or "re-focusing", biofeedback and relaxation to deal with both physical tension and anxiety. Systematic desensitization of fear is employed to reduce driving related anxiety.

THE GOALS OF THE PROGRAM ARE AS FOLLOWS:

To assist patients in managing their pain and stress without continuing dependence on passive treatment
        modalities and medications.
To enable patients to concentrate on their active program, return to activities of daily living sooner and
        prevent chronicity or future re-occurrences.
To teach patients the use of practical problem solving techniques to overcome their own challenges.
To establish a focus on viable goals with realistic time targeted steps.
To establish an attitude of self-reliance and optimism in managing pain, stress and anxiety.
