Chiropractic philosophy gravitates toward a holistic approach to healing which combines elements of the mind, body and spirit.  Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body’s inability to adapt to its environment.  It addresses these diseases by locating and adjusting a musculoskeletal area of the body, which is functioning improperly.  Accidents, falls, stress, tension, overexertion, and many other factors can result in a

Displacement/derangement of the spinal column (also called subluxations), causing irritation to spinal nerve roots.  These irritations are often what cause malfunctions in the human body.  By reducing the irritation to the spinal nerves, your body is able to operate more efficiently and more comfortably.

What happens at my chiropractic visit?

Dr. Davis will take a detailed history, physical examination, which may include x-rays, S-EMG, and other diagnostic procedures.  In addition, a careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be affecting or causing your condition.  After a comprehensive report, Dr. Davis will then reduce pressure on nerves, restore alignment, improve mobility and relieve stiffness and pain by giving a gentle spinal adjustment.  The adjustment is usually given by hand or non-force Activator Methods, and consists of applying pressure to the areas of the spine that are out of alignment or that do not move properly within their normal range of motion.  Under normal circumstances, adjustments do not hurt.  Adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe.

Who should see a chiropractor?

Chiropractic care is great for all ages, even within hours of birth.  Newborns, children, adults and the young-at-heart all require different procedures of adjusting based on their ages.  Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy has been shown to improve overall health through the pregnancy and  even shorten labour time dramatically!  A consultation with Dr. Davis is extremely important if you are ill, in pain, have been in an accident, lead a stressful life, play sports or simply want to improve your overall wellness.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture began 5,000 to 7,000 years ago in China.  Early Chinese physicians discovered there is an energy network traversing just below the surface of the skin.

The energy works in harmony with the body’s circulatory, nervous, muscular, digestive, and genitourinary and all other systems of the body.  When this vital energy becomes blocked or weakened, an effect in a body system or anatomic location becomes evident.  Stimulation of one or a combination of key Acupoints on the body may restore harmony to the affected area.  Dr. Davis will use electronic stimulation, laser beam, needle or pressure to treat an acupoint.

Is Acupuncture painful?

One would assume inserting a needle into the skin would be painful.  Because of the extreme slenderness of the needle, most people compare the sensations to “less than a mosquito bite”.  A phenomenon referred to as “TEHCHI” may occur when the energy is contacted.  This sensation is felt as a mild to moderate heaviness or tingling.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments vary with different conditions and individuals.  Chronic problems generally require more treatments than acute ones.  Some patients notice an immediate improvement after the first treatment, whereas others may not notice any effect for several visits.  Researchers internationally agree the usual number of treatments is between eight and sixteen.  The usual frequency is between two and four times a week.

What can acupuncture help?

There are hundreds of conditions that respond well to Acupuncture.  The World Health Organization, working in close harmony with the International Acupuncture training centre of the Shanghai College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has indicated Acupuncture is effective in the following conditions:

  • Acute and chronic pain relief
  • migraine, tension cluster and sinus headaches
  • Bell’s Palsy, trigeminal neuralgia
  • bladder dysfunction, bed wetting
  • cervical (neck) pain, mid-back pain
  • low back pain and sciatica
  • tennis and golfer’s elbow, frozen shoulder
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • post-operative pain relief
  • gastric problems
  • asthma, allergies
  • abnormal blood pressure
  • anxiety
  • and even turning breech babies!

This is only a partial list of the numerous conditions Acupuncture has been credited with helping.
